Although the origin of the pirate flag is unknown, it was an important part of the pirate’s armory. It is generally thought that it was used to strike fear in the hearts and minds of enemies. In fact, it is considered one of the earliest forms of psychological warfare as the pirate flag would often scare victims into a speedy surrender. The classic skull and bones design comes from the Captain’s log where it was used to indicate the death of a sailor. While  most pirate flags used a variation of this design, often the Captain and his crew wanted their own flag so many also had other images such as skeletons, swords, hourglasses, goblets, and hearts.
