Place your drink in the safe keeping of Shamrocks and four-leaf clovers
Because of their similarity in appearance, many people do not realize that the Shamrock and the four leaf clover are actually two different symbols. Irish legend has it that the missionary, Saint Patrick demonstrated the principle behind the Trinity using a Shamrock, pointing to its three leaflets united by a common stalk, thereby reinforcing the significance of the number 3. It is for this reason that the Shamrock is worn on the St. Patrick’s day and all other special occasions to celebrate his work and to bring ‘a bit o’luck’ to the Irish. Four leaf clovers on the other hand, truly have their power in the number 4. They grew in significance during the Middle Ages when people thought that a four leaf clover not only brought the receiver good luck but would allow him to see into the spirit world. Each of the four leaves is symbolic: The first leaf represents faith, the second hope, the third love, and the fourth luck. So for all the good luck they allegedly bring, 4-leaf clovers technically can’t be considered Shamrocks (not in the sense that St. Patrick made the latter famous, at least).
